Changes and Growth of Asperger Syndrome Children and Parents Participating in Social Skills Training Program

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a program for social skill training of children with Asperger syndrome and to verify effectiveness of the program. Twenty pairs of Asperger syndrome elementary school students and their parents were enrolled in the study. The program consisted of 15 sessions, 90 minutes for children s programs and 40 minutes for parents.
The program consisted of social skills surveyed as the most necessary for children with Asperger Syndrome and proceeded with the procedure of ¡®goal identification-conceptualization-explanationdemonstration-role play-task assignment¡¯. Parent education was conducted through the process of ¡®Checking Tasks-Explaining AS Characteristics and Social Skills-Assigning Tasks¡¯. In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, data were collected and analyzed through parent group interviews.
As a result, two subject areas and 6 sub-themes were extracted in the case of children: social skills improvement and peer relationship improvement. In the case of parents, it was analyzed as the subject area of understanding children and understanding of parent role and 4 sub-topics.
